God’s Love Isn’t Earned. Why Are You Still Trying?

Are you stuck trying to earn what’s already yours?

Let’s talk about the difference between God’s love for you and your love for Him—and why getting it wrong leads to burnout, guilt, and distance.

GOD’S LOVE vs. LOVING GOD.

God’s Love Is a Covenant, Not a Contract

His love is based on His nature, not your performance.

It’s not a deal you earn or break—it’s a covenant of grace, rooted in His character.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God…” – Romans 8:38–39

  1. God’s Love Is Unconditional and Unchanging

There’s nothing you can do to make God love you more,

and nothing you can do to make Him love you less.

His love is not a reward for good behavior or withheld for bad choices.

God IS love (1 John 4:8). It’s who He is—constant, unwavering, and unconditional.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

God loved you at your worst. Before you prayed, obeyed, served, or repented—He already loved you.

  1. However… Your Love for God Can Change

While you can’t affect how God loves you,

you can affect how you receive and return that love.

There’s a lot you can do that can either:

Grow your love for God, or

Cause your love to grow cold (see Matthew 24:12).

  1. Loving God Is How You Experience His Manifest Love

Everyone is loved by God,

but not everyone experiences the fullness of His manifest love.

“But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in Him.” 1 John 2:5

Keeping God’s word—obeying what He says—is how His love becomes fully expressed and matured in us.

  1. Loving God = Obeying His Commands

Obedience is not earning love—it’s how you walk in fellowship with Him.

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” – 1 John 5:3

“Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me.

The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love them and show Myself to them.” – John 14:21

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” – John 14:23

Think of It Like This…

God’s love is like the sun—always shining.

But if you never open the curtain, you’ll sit in darkness—even while the light is available.

The sun doesn’t stop shining.

But opening the curtain is your part—and that’s what loving God looks like:

obedience, trust, intimacy, and surrender.

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays…” -Malachi 4:2 (NIV)

Summary – Truths to Hold On To:

  • God’s love is unearned and unconditional
  • Your obedience doesn’t qualify you for His love—it helps you experience it
  •  God’s love is a covenant, not a contract
  • Loving God draws you deeper into intimacy and transforms your life
  • His manifest love flows where there’s a relationship and response

Bonus Insight:

God’s love is not a license to live however you want.

“The Lord disciplines those He loves…” – Hebrews 12:6

True love corrects, transforms, and calls us higher—not just comforts.
