Understanding the Difference between Self-Righteousness & True Righteousness:
People often operate in two kinds of righteousness: Self-Righteousness and True Righteousness. Understanding the difference is key to living in the freedom of God’s grace rather than the bondage of human effort.
WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS?
Righteousness means a right standing with God (being right with God). The Bible teaches that righteousness is not something we achieve—it’s something we receive through faith. It is not just about moral behavior but about our standing before God.
It is not by our actions but by our identity in Christ.
Romans 3:22 – “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”
The Bible speaks of two types of righteousness:
- Self-Righteousness
- True Righteousness
THE DIFFERENCE: Works vs. Faith.
- SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS – Righteousness by Works
This is when people try to earn God’s favor and approval through their own efforts, morality, or religious practices.
It is performance-based. But the Bible is clear—It is impossible to meet God’s perfect standard by human effort alone!
Self-righteousness leads to:
- Legalism – Thinking obeying rules makes you righteous.
- Pride & Judgment – Comparing yourself to others.
- Guilt & Frustration – Feeling like you’re never “good enough.”
Isaiah 64:6 “All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.”
Many fall into the trap of self-righteousness—trying to earn God’s approval instead of trusting in the righteousness that comes through faith.
The truth is, no one can achieve righteousness by works.
Galatians 2:21 says, “If righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
- TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS– Righteousness by Faith
True righteousness is not something we achieve—it is something we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.
The gospel teaches that we are made righteous through faith in Christ. This is a gift, not something we earn or as a result of our works.
2 Corinthians 5:21 says – “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
We receive true righteousness by:
- Believing in Jesus’ finished work (John 19:30).
- Resting in grace, not striving in works (Ephesians 2:8).
- Living from our identity in Christ (Romans 8:1).
THE MISCONCEPTION: “I Have to Work for Righteousness”
Many people struggle because they think they need to achieve righteousness (Right Standing with God) rather than receive it.
This mindset leads to:
- Trying to “be good enough” for God.
- Measuring spirituality by performance.
- Feeling condemned when they fail.
Romans 10:3 – “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.”
Truth: We don’t act righteous to become righteous—we live righteously because we already are righteous in Christ!
Ephesians 4:24 – “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Galatians 6:3
“For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself”.
Luke 18:9
“And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt”.
LIVING A LIFE WORTHY OF THE GOSPEL
Since we are righteous in Christ, our lives should reflect that righteousness—not to earn salvation, but to demonstrate the reality of Christ in us.
Philippians 1:27-30 – “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ… striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.”
This means:
- Living righteously as a testimony to others (Matthew 5:16).
- Resisting the devil and not giving him a foothold (Eph 4:27).
- Renewing our minds to align with God’s will (Romans 12:2).
- Walking by the Spirit, not the flesh (Galatians 5:16)..
LIVING FROM RIGHTEOUSNESS, NOT FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
We don’t need to strive to prove ourselves. Instead, we live a life that reflects Christ—not to earn His love but because we already have it (Ephesians 4:24) and depend on the Holy Spirit to transform us rather than relying on our own strength (Galatians 5:16).
FINAL THOUGHT:
Your righteousness in Christ is already secure—now walk in it! Conduct yourself in a manner worthy of the gospel so that your life becomes a testimony of God’s grace.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for making me righteous in Christ. Help me to walk in this truth daily, standing firm in faith and living a life that glorifies You. Amen!
